With his 643rd goal for Barcelona, the Argentine set a record previously held by the Brazilian legend.
FC Barcelona did not get beyond a 2-2 draw against Valencia in the Spanish league on Saturday. Superstar Lionel Messi headed 1-1 in injury time in the first half after missing a penalty seconds earlier. Meanwhile, top striker Luis Suarez led Atletico Madrid with a brace to a 3-1 win over Elche. The championship leader thus consolidated its top position.
Milestone for Messi
The Uruguayan scored the first two goals, Diego Costa finished with a converted penalty. Real Sociedad still have the opportunity to draw level on points in the evening, but have already played two more games.
Barcelona are already eight points behind Atletico in fifth place. Messi reached another milestone in his career: With his goal, the Argentine set a record previously held by the Brazilian legend Pele. Pele scored 643 goals for Brazilian club Santos, and Messi now has the same number of goals for Barca. No other player has ever scored more goals than the two for a single club.
