FC Barcelona – La Liga Fourteen players sidelined under Koeman
It was a 2020 to forget for Barcelona on many levels, and the overwhelming number of injuries they were forced to deal with had an obvious impact on their sporting ambitions.
The year ended on another sour note on the injury front, with the announcement that Philippe Coutinho would have to undergo surgery on his left knee following a clash during the 1-1 draw with Eibar.
Ronald Koeman has had to deal with a depleted squad since taking over, with up to 14 players spending time on the sidelines.
Coutinho missed four matches between October and November as a result of a hamstring injury, but his latest knock has proven far more serious and will have to undergo surgery.
The Brazilian adds to the Blaugrana’s list of long-term absentees which includes Sergi Roberto, Gerard Pique and Ansu Fati.
In addition to those four, Koeman has also been without Marc Andre ter Stegen, Ronald Araujo, Samuel Umtiti, Ousmane Dembele, Martin Braithwaite, Jordi Alba, Junior Firpo, Matheus Fernandes, Sergio Busquets and Leo Messi at some point in the current season.
Dembele, Ansu Fati and Ter Stegen have all undergone surgery this campaign, and now Coutinho will have to do the same.
Koeman has attempted to rotate his squad throughout the campaign, notably handing Messi two games off in the Champions League and resting Frenkie de Jong against Valencia.
The congested schedule has had a telling effect on football clubs across Europe, but Barcelona in particular.
