Andreas Christensen was the unfortunate recipient of a red card against Liverpool today.
The Chelsea defender was given his marching orders after hauling down Sadio Mane as the Senegalese forward charged towards Kepa Arrizabalaga’s goal.
Referee Paul Tierney brandished a yellow card at first but after consulting the VAR, Christensen’s punishment was upgraded to a red card.
On the face of it, the amended decision appeared to be the correct one. Chelsea’s Danish defender made no attempt to play the ball and Mane would have been clean through had he not been fouled.
It was yet another case of the VAR acting in a positive manner and it’s proof that the technology can be a brilliant addition to the Premier League.
However, Jurgen Klopp was clearly not happy by the fact that those on the Liverpool bench were in a buoyant mood in response to the intervention by those at Stockley Park.
Journalists Julien Laurens and Miguel Delaney reported that the Reds boss fired back, saying that they should never applaud a red card.
According to Laurens, Klopp said: “Are you crazy? We never ever do that, ok?”
Fair play, Jurgen. Christensen’s red card late in the first half proved to be decisive, with Liverpool going on to dominate proceedings after the restart to secure a 2-0 win.
Sadio Mane opened the scoring with a brilliant header from Roberto Firmino’s cross and had his second of the game shortly after courtesy of yet another error from Kepa.
The Liverpool superstar pressured the Chelsea ‘keeper in possession and was duly handed the ball by the Spaniard to tap home.
You feel certain today was Kepa’s last game for Chelsea, with the signing of Edouard Mendy from Rennes to be confirmed next week.
Speaking of goalkeepers, Liverpool proved the worth of having one of the very best between the sticks as Alisson Becker thwarted any idea of a Chelsea comeback.
The Brazilian saved Jorginho’s to keep the score at 2-0 and save his team from a nervous last 15 minutes.
No need for Klopp to have a go at his bench for applauding that!
