The Sunday slate in Spain has four matches on the schedule. We’re in the early stages of the 2020-21 La Liga campaign. It feels like it was only yesterday that Real Madrid were hoisting the trophy in Spain. Barcelona doesn’t want to be reminded.
They did not look poised or focused at all upon returning from the league lockdown. Sure, Real Madrid are a terrific outfit, and they deserved to finish atop the LaLiga table. However, they got some help from an undisciplined Barcelona squad.
Barcelona had a glorious opportunity to get things done, but just weren’t prepared after the season resumed. I will say that they’ve been playing a better brand of football thus far in the 2020-21 campaign. This after there was controversy surrounding Lionel Messi and the club.
Messi has not been shy about his willingness to go elsewhere for a scenery change. He’s obviously still in Barcelona, and he will be here for at least another year. Judging by his body language towards the end of last season, it almost looked like a foregone conclusion that Messi was gone from Spain.
Barcelona go into Sunday with a record of 2-0-0. They’ve only played two matches, while everyone else in front of them has played at least three. Real Madrid have played three matches, with a draw in the season opener and then two straight wins.
Sevilla has been in good form as well, with a record of 2-0-0 and no blemishes on their resume versus Cadiz and Levante. They played Bayern Munich in the UEFA Super Cup Final and held their own in a 2-1 loss on September 24. Despite the loss, Sevilla beat Manchester United, 2-1, and Inter Milan, 3-2, in Europa League play. Barca cannot underestimate them on Sunday. Barcelona vs. Sevilla Prediction:
Sevilla head to Camp Nou with some momentum on their side. They defeated Cadiz by a score of 3-2 and then 1-0 over Levante at home. Cadiz was just promoted back to La Liga following 14 years out of the top-flight in Spain, while Levante finished with a pedestrian mark of 14-7-17 for 12th. In other words, Sevilla hasn’t been tested yet in the 2020-21 La Liga campaign.
You have to think that their match against Bayern Munich sucked a little air out of them, and it might not be evident until they play a worthy club like today at Camp Nou. Going through the motions was enough against Cadiz and Levante, but won’t be today. Barcelona is by far their toughest opponent since that match on September 24.
Barcelona owns a perfect record of 2-0-0 going into Sunday, too. They have a 4-0 win over Villarreal at home, quite impressive, and 3-0 over Celta Vigo this past Thursday. Everything has been working well for them despite the threat of Messi’s situation being a distraction. Since getting embarrassed by Bayern Munich in August, Barcelona has beaten five opponents by a combined score of 14-2.
This hasn’t been a club that Sevilla has had any success against over the years. Barca has 13 wins as opposed just a couple for Sevilla in their previous 16 matches. In their last trip to Camp Nou, the hosts were able to dispose of Sevilla with ease by a score 4-0 on October 6, 2019. In their last three clashes at Camp Nou, Barca has pummeled Sevilla for a combined score of 14-3. Sevilla is a quality club, but I don’t believe they figure it out against their kryptonite on Sunday.
