Google ends support for Daydream VR platform

Google’s huge list of “buried” projects has been replenished with another one – the Daydream virtual reality platform.

Google launched Daydream and released a VR headset in 2016. By placing the smartphone in a dedicated headset slot, it was possible to play games in virtual reality. Last year’s Pixel 4 no longer supported Daydream, and now the company has finally dropped support.

“The Daydream app is no longer supported by Google and may not work correctly on some devices running Android 11 and later,” Google said. The company explained that “they did not receive the widespread acceptance from consumers or developers that they hoped for.”

However, the Daydream View headset is no longer for sale, and many third-party Daydream apps and features may still be available as standalone apps in the Google Play store.
