Jamie Carragher still not satisfied with Liverpool despite their impressive win over RB Leipzig

‘Going forward that’s STILL a problem’: Jamie Carragher not satisfied with Liverpool despite their Champions League win over RB Leipzig as club legend claims Jurgen Klopp’s side ‘still didn’t create an awful lot’ after dire run of domestic results

Jamie Carragher criticised Liverpool’s Champions League last-16 display against RB Leipzig despite the Reds’ 2-0 victory, claiming his former side ‘didn’t create an awful lot’.

Second-half goals from Mo Salah and Sadio Mane gave Jurgen Klopp’s side a much-needed boosted after three straight Premier League defeats – with Liverpool now in firm control of their European knockout tie.

The Reds also struck the bar through Andy Robertson’s long-range effort and Roberto Firmino had a goal disallowed after Mane took the ball out of play, but Carragher was still not satisfied with the attacking intent showed by Liverpool.

He told CBS’ Champions League coverage: ‘I saw a Liverpool performance that I have seen in the last few weeks. Liverpool’s energy, the pressing has been there for a few weeks and it was there from the start.

‘I am not trying to take anything away from that result. That’s a magnificent result. That team is just behind (Bayern) Munich in the Bundesliga and they did really well in the Champions League last season.

‘But the actual goals scored were on the back of mistakes and they were clinical. They still didn’t create an awful lot in the game. Again, I am not being critical.

‘But they haven’t created an awful lot. Then one mistake, the ball has gone into the opposition net, and that could have happened tonight even though they got away with it because of the goalkeeper at 0-0.

‘For how well Liverpool played tonight, they still didn’t create an awful lot tonight themselves. For me, going forward that’s still a problem.’

Despite the victory in Hungary – a neutral venue for the tie given the current coronavirus pandemic – Liverpool were indebted to two RB Leipzig mistakes for both of their goals.

Marcel Sabitzer’s poor back pass allowed Salah to run through on goal and finish comfortably, while Nordi Mukiele’s slip allowed Mane to finish easily just a few minutes later.

Bundesliga side Leipzig had chances themselves. Forward Dani Olmo hit the base of the post from an early first-half header while goalkeeper Alisson put a difficult fortnight behind him by making key saves from Hwang Hee-chan and Christopher Nkunku.

Despite the Carragher criticism, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp was delighted with his side’s performance to end a recent losing streak.

The German said post-match: ‘I was really pleased with the performance and it led to a deserved win. It was a game that we did not expect big advantages because of the mentality of both teams but I thought we were better for most of the night. I know Leipzig pretty well and I know how overwhelming they can be.

‘That is what we had to deal with and the boys played a really good game. We did well. We are not children anymore and I know people have not been happy with results.

‘The boys deserved the win, I think. We forced them to make mistakes and I am completely happy with the performance.

‘Overall I can say that, the whole package, I’m very pleased with the performance. Whatever they tried, we had an answer. They had chances, but that’s normal.

‘The majority of the time, we had control of the game which was very important, and that doesn’t happen a lot against Leipzig.’
