One Leeds supporter wrote: ‘Contact was outside the box, surely!’.
Another added: ‘Never a penalty. That slight joke of a contact was outside the box as well. Clear intention from the ref against us.’
In addition, another wrote: ‘Contact was outside the box. Alioski’s feet still clearly outside the line even after the player hit the ground. Another “London” penalty….’.
Leeds supporters were adamant that the contact from Alioski occurred outside the box
Former referee Peter Walton said on BT Sport: ‘VAR is looking at the factual element of this, whether or not there’s contact made.
‘It’s the thigh on thigh, not the foot, that can be clearly seen from behind the goal. I have to agree with that. Jermaine says there might be contact on the foot there.
‘If you look at it from further angles, you can make out the fact it happened on the line. As I said, the line means it’s in the penalty area.
Supporters of other teams were also left perplexed by the decision.
A Manchester United fan wrote: ‘How’s that a penalty for spurs? The challenge happened outside the box.
‘The leg Alioski challenged also was Bergwijn’s left foot outside the box.
‘I can’t understand that’.
Another observer commented: ‘Contact for the penalty was clearly outside the box. How have they got that wrong?’.
The penalty was awarded after VAR was consulted, with Harry Kane scoring for Tottenham
After Kane’s goal put Tottenham in the ascendancy, Jose Mourinho’s side doubled their lead through Son Heung-min.
Toby Alderweireld later made it 3-0 to Tottenham.
