Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur didn’t take long to produce drama.
In truth, anticipation for the game has been building up over the last few weeks with Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer exchanging barbs about United’s penalty record in the press.
It couldn’t have been more fitting then that the game opened with a – you guessed it – spot kick for United within the first 30 seconds, which was won by Anthony Martial from a clumsy tackle.
Chaotic start at Old Trafford
It will come as no surprise that Bruno Fernandes held his nerve to score from 12 yards, remarkably elevating his penalty tally to 10 conversions in just 26 appearances in the famous red jersey.
But sadly for the home side, they weren’t in the lead for long and a rare goal from Tanguy Ndombele ensured the chaotic start to the game continued.
On paper it was a pretty simple, close-range finish from a midfielder who has hitherto struggled in the Premier League, but we wouldn’t be here if the home side didn’t give him a massive leg-up.
Poor defending from Maguire
Besides, it came in embarrassing circumstances for United with some particularly poor heading from Harry Maguire compounding a defensive disasterclass that led to the scrappy equaliser.
Maguire failed with two attempts to head the ball clear, the first of which flying immediately towards Eric Bailly and the second causing panic in the box by essentially playing Tottenham in on goal.

Son fires Tottenham into the lead
You’d think that United would at least regroup after such a catastrophic moment, but this is the Premier League we’re talking about and Spurs actually fired themselves into the lead.
Son Heung-min, who was surprisingly subbed at half-time against Newcastle United, provided the finishing touch with a fine one-on-one strike after bearing down on David de Gea.
This certainly isn’t the first time this season that United have dug their own grave in the defensive department and it’s exactly why many fans have been demanding a new centre-back this summer.
Victor Lindelof was the man at fault during the opening weekend defeat to Crystal Palace and now the spotlight has returned to Maguire, which proves an all-too familiar feeling against Tottenham.
Sky Sports pundit and United legend Roy Keane went viral at the back end of last season for his explosive reaction to mistakes from Maguire and De Gea during the 1-1 Spurs draw.
“I am staggered at Maguire, staggered that an international player can just get done by this,” the Irishman memorably ranted. “Maguire and De Gea – I wouldn’t even let them on the bus after the match.
“Get a taxi back to Manchester. Shocking! Maguire, I am disgusted with him and De Gea. You should hang your heads in shame.”
Keane, no doubt, will be absolutely furious with what he’s seen from the world’s most expensive defender once again and it could result in pure humiliation for United against their former coach.
