Argentina and Barcelona talisman, Lionel Messi is widely hailed as the greatest player in the history of the sport, with the striker winning numerous professional and individual honours during his career so far, including a record six Ballon d’Or awards.
Messi is without doubt one of the most popular sports figure on the planet, however according to a study, Manchester United forward, Anthony Martial is more popular than the Argentinian in China. As per a report in Red Card via Dailystar, Juventus superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo is the most popular footballer on Chinese social media with 15million followers.
Red Devils legend, David Beckham comes in second with 8.72m followers followed by Paris Saint-Germain superstar, Neymar, with Martial’s 6.6m followers ensuring that he comes ahead of Messi in the popularity stakes.
While many would be surprised to see the Frenchman ahead of Messi in the popularity stakes, it might not be too surprising considering that United as a club is arguably the most popular club in the world.
It will be interesting to see whether this figure changes in the near future considering that Messi’s reputation and his exploits on the pitch are legendary, while Martial is yet to fire consistently and is not a match-winner in the league of Messi.
