Newcastle United are pushing to convince Arsenal to loan them Joe Willock.

The 21-year-old midfielder was on the bench against Manchester United on Saturday and is eager to play.

Willock has spent most of his Arsenal career being used as a substitute, starting only two Premier League games out of seven appearances this season.

The youngster has shown promise though, especially in Arsenal’s Europa League campaign where Willock has a notched up a highly impressive three goals and as many assists in five games.

Arsenal have reservations over Newcastle’s pursuit of Willock as they are in the process of allowing Ainsley Maitland-Niles out on loan as well.

Newcastle had enquired about the latter, as did West Brom, but Southampton are considered favourites for Maitland-Niles’ signature.

Willock is top of Steve Bruce’s list though Newcastle also want Hamza Choudhury from Leicester and have asked about Olivier Ntcham at Celtic as they try to add at least two loans before Monday’s deadline.

Bruce would also like a centre-back after Jamaal Lascelles picked up a hamstring injury on Saturday. The defender could be facing several weeks on the sidelines having only recently returned after struggling with the after-effects of coronavirus.

Earlier this month Arsenal were reportedly considering using Willock as a makeweight in a deal to bring Norwich City’s creative midfielder Emiliano Buendia to the Emirates.
