How the 3 Barcelona presidential hopefuls plan to fix the economic crisis
Loaning Jean-Clair Todibo the only move Barcelona made on deadline day.
The transfer deadline came and went with Barcelona being relatively inactive aside from agreeing to a loan deal for defender Jean-Clair Todibo.
But it could have been a busier end to the transfer window if the club had come to an agreement for two its players.
More from Everything Barca
According to Mundo Deportivo, there were offers from the Premier League for both Martin Braithwaite and Junior Firpo hours before the close of the transfer window. Arsenal were reportedly interested in Firpo and an undisclosed side was interested in Braithwaite.
However, the interested clubs were only looking for. a possible loan deal.
The Catalans were not opposed to negotiating for the players but an agreement for neither player was reached.
A move would have been beneficial for all parties involved. Both players would have gotten an opportunity at more playing time under less pressure.
Firpo had been linked with a move away throughout the winter window with AC Milan being one of the clubs interested. They also only wanted him on loan but the offer they presented did not meet what Barcelona were looking for.
Braithwaite has long insisted that he did not want to leave and was willing to stay and fight for more playing time. He, too, has seen his minutes reduced following the resurgence of Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembélé. When healthy, the Frenchmen are always going to round out the attack alongside Lionel Messi.
The club released their squad list ahead of the Copa del Rey match against Granada with Firpo being a notable omission.
Manager Ronald Koeman seems to have lost his trust in the Barça left-back who has featured sparingly. When he has, he’s looked nowhere close to the player the club thought they were getting when they signed him from Real Betis.
Both players are staying for now. But with the club needing to sell players in the summer to get out of their current financial hole, Firpo and Braithwaite are likely to be at the top of their list of players they will move on.
