Spanish newspaper El Mundo revealed the staggering details of Lionel Messi’s Barcelona contract this Sunday and the figures made for astonishing reading.

His contract, which keeps him at the club until the summer of this year, is worth a total of around 555 million euros.

Messi has never liked his private matters to be made public, especially something as delicate at this, and it’s clear that this kind of revelation won’t do anything to help with the mission of keeping him at the Camp Nou next season.

Messi had decided to leave Barcelona in the last summer transfer window. The only reason he didn’t end up leaving was because club president Josep Maria Bartomeu claimed his only way out was to pay the astronomical release clause in his contract. The Argentine reluctantly ended up staying, but with the vision of leaving when his contract runs out on June 30 this year.

With Bartomeu now gone, Messi decided to leave any decision until a new president is appointed. Things have changed since then, though, and a salary reduction has been introduced for all players in the squad, including Messi.

The players are well aware of the financial effect of the pandemic, but also know of the poor management of the club by ex-president Bartomeu and this wage cut leaves a bitter taste.

His financial matters are now in the public domain and his huge salary would suggest that him being at the club is detrimental for their finances. This is far from the case, however, given the huge revenue he brings in through sponsors every year.

The Barcelona legend will have a decision to make in the coming months, but it is clear that all this will be driving a wedge between him and the club.

The footballing promises that the new president can make will be more important than the financial ones and will be key in keeping him at the Camp Nou.
