It’s pretty safe to say that Kylian Mbappe almost singlehandedly destroyed Barcelona in the Champions League last Tuesday night. A hattrick of goals and an overall incredible performance were enough to sink the Catalans entirely and get the well-deserved victory.
And following such a display, it’s hard not to look ahead to the future and see this kid on top of the world. He’s got the talent, the pace, the skill and the eye for goal that forwards need to thrive in this sport. But will he even reach the heights of someone like Lionel Messi himself?
According to a Rangers legend, Ally McCoist, who talked on TalkSPORT, the Frenchman is very good but he’ll never be as good as Leo. He said: “I’m not sure Mbappe will [ever reach the levels of Messi]. Mbappe cannot do things with the ball that Messi can.”
This forces a very interesting narrative. No one knows what the future brings, of course, but if he can stay injury-free and even further improve, only the sky might be the limit for Mbappe. At the same time, however, Messi is just on a different level than anyone else in the world of football.
You can score a lot of goals and even create a lot of chances but McCoist has a point, the things Messi does with the ball are simply outworldly. Maybe Mbappe can break some records, bag lots of goals and win lots of trophies but is he going to do it with the same magic of the little Argentine genious?
That remains to be seen. The early signs are fantastic for the Frenchman and no one can deny that he’s already a world-class player. Just the thought of Mbappe improving even more is scary for his opposition but being better than Messi is no small task.
It would take an enormous effort for the Paris Saint-Germain star to reach that kind of level. At the moment, it’s difficult to tell.
But in football, everything is possible. Even reaching god-like levels of Leo Messi. Can he do it though?
We’ll have to wait and see.
