Lionel Messi’s latest deal with Barcelona is worth up to € 555 million ($ 673 million) in four seasons, the Elmundo newspaper reported on Sunday.
The Spanish daily said Messi had access to a document signed with a Catalan club in 2017. This document contained bonds and variables that could reach close to € 138 million ($ 167 million) each season. The newspaper said it was the most expensive contract ever paid to athletes.
Messi will have to pay about half of that amount in Spain with taxes.
According to the report, the 33-year-old player has already secured more than € 510 million ($ 419 million) in contracts.
The leak occurs when Barcelona tries to manage the huge debt caused primarily by the coronavirus pandemic. The club has been led by the Caretaker Commission since President Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned in October in the face of a motion of no confidence. The new presidential election is scheduled for March 7.
The newspaper also detailed how Messi helped Messi win more than 30 titles and how the club rewarded over the years.
Messi has been in Barcelona for nearly 20 years and was sent off at the end of last season after saying he wasn’t happy with the club’s direction. He was denied his request, but can leave for free at the end of the season.
Barcelona will be able to rise to second place in the Spanish league on Sunday at home wins with Athletic Bilbao.
