FC Barcelona – La Liga Contracts of all three expire in June
January promises to be a decisive month for the future of Barcelona, with a new president to be elected by the end of the month and with the winter market bringing question marks with it.
Ronald Koeman would love for a January reinforcement, but the club’s difficult financial situation means that this would be very complicated.
One of the main consequences of the change of year from 2020 to 2021 is the fact that Lionel Messi is now free to negotiate with other clubs, given that there are now only six months left on his contract.
The possibility of losing the star forward is bigger than ever and this worries Barcelona fans. What’s worse is that there is an interim board in place at Barcelona right now, so they can’t do much to alter Messi‘s path.
Messi‘s plan is to wait to see what happens with the club’s presidential elections, which will take place on January 24. Other clubs are allowed to get in touch with him beforehand, though.
There are two players who Barcelona have recently expressed interest in who are in the same situation as Messi. They are Eric Garcia and Memphis Depay.
They are both determined to move on from Manchester City and Lyon respectively when their current contracts expire in June, so if their current teams want to bring in any transfer fee then they’d have to find a buyer in January.
Barcelona would likely need to wait for the new president to be elected for any serious pursuit of either player.
There is a belief that Garcia will become a Barcelona player, whether now or in the summer, and the Catalan club could try to sign him this month given their injuries in central defence.
They know, though, that Manchester City won’t make it easy and won’t want to strengthen a Champions League rival.
When it comes to Depay, his arrival is more complicated. It’s not just that he would cost a sizable fee, but it’s that he is a player who was linked to the club in the summer because of Koeman and it’s not clear if the Dutch coach will even be at the Camp Nou next season.
